Previous | Home | NextAcross the river from the Place de la Concorde is the Palais Bourbon, the first home of École Polytechnique, a school which furnished much research important to the "Rediscovery of the Elements." Fearful of the loss of academic expertise during the Revolution, Gaspard Monge and Lazare Carnot established "École centrale des travaux publics" (Central school of public works), which later was to be renamed the École Polytechnique. Professors such as Fourcroy, Vauquelin, and Lagrange participated in instruction. The view is southeast.
